Bees make their decisions collectively-and in a perfectly democratic way. Each year, in late spring, they face a crucial problem: swarming is the method the family uses to reproduce, and dealing with it is a matter of life and death for the "perfect society." In choosing a new home, the survival of the entire Beehive is at stake. The swarm, once detached from the Beehive-mother, makes a temporary camp, and initiates a process of research, discussion and decision-making involving hundreds of explorer bees, who "dance" and report back to the swarm the outcome of their investigations: in the end, thanks to a wonderful natural mechanism entirely similar to that used by some of the neurons in our brains, the choice is made, and it is almost always the best choice. In this volume we find summarized the magnificent story of the decades-long research carried out by biologists and animal behavior scholars, but we also find rich insights into how we humans, too, might improve the way we collectively discuss and decide.
